Her name and lineage
Juwairiya’s father’s name was Haris Bin Ali Zarar who belonged to the family of Banu Mastaliq.

Marriage to the Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam)
Juwairiya (Radi’Allahu Anha) was first married to Musafey Bin Safwan who also belonged to the same tribe.  Both her father and husband were enemies of Islam and had prepared an attack on Medina.  As the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) got this news, the companions were asked to prepare for this.  As a result, the Muslim force left Medina for Marisie, which was on a distance of nine spots from Medina.  Juwairiya’s father Haris came to know of this and fled away with his horses.  The population of Marisie defended and fought with steadfastness, but eventually fled away due to the concentrated attack of the Muslims.

Amongst the captives was Juwairiya (Radi’Allahu Anha).  When her father Haris, found out about this, he came to the Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) and said, ‘I am the Head of my tribe and it is beneath my dignity that my daughter may become a slave woman.  Kindly set her free.’  The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) replied, ‘It would be better if the matter is left for Juwairiya to decide’.  Haris went to his daughter and told her that the Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) had left the decision to her.  To this she replied, ‘I would like to stay in the service of the Apostle of Allah’.  The Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) then married Juwairiya (Radi’Allahu Anha), as a free lady.  After her marriage, all the war captives were released.

Features and Character
Juwairiya (Radi’Allahu Anha) was beautiful and well balanced in her appearance.  Aisha (Radi’Allahu Anha) described her as a woman sweet and comely and whomsoever saw her, was attracted.
She narrated quite a few Traditions; those who heard Traditions on her authority include the likes of Ibn Abbas, Jabir, and Ibn Umar.

She lived a life of strict austerity.  One morning she was praying in the Masjid, and the Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) saw her praying as he passed by.  When he (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) passed again near midday, she was still praying.  She was greatly loved by the Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam).
